Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center Vision:

"The mission of the Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center is, by developing partnerships within the region, to nurture and strengthen the health care workforce, especially in underserved communities."

An Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is…

An Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a not-for-profit organization that works with local schools, colleges, universities and communities in areas identified by the Federal Government as having shortages in health professionals or identified as medically underserved neighborhoods or regions. Working with community-based partners, as AHEC recruits students into health care professions, trains and supports health care professionals and advocates at all levels of government to assist in the elimination of health disparities.

The Hudson Mohawk Area Health Education Center service area is comprised of ten counties in northeastern New York; Albany, Essex, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Warren and Washington. This region reflects significant contrasts in population density, from a low of 3 residents per square mile in Hamilton County to a high of 711 persons per square mile in Schenectady County. According to the Bureau of Census figures, the population for this area is 1,067,649 and nearly 20% of this population is considered "underserved" in that they live in an area federally classified as having an insufficient number of health care providers.

As our mission, we will:

Link health care delivery systems and educational resources to support the needs of underserved communities.
Create community-based education and training opportunities for health professionals and medical students.
Increase the number of individuals from minority and underserved communities who enter health careers.
Support interdisciplinary training initiatives that respond to community needs.
Promote health, prevent disease and provide cost-efficient primary health care services.
Respond to emerging needs and priorities specific to building a health care workforce.

The Hudson Mohawk Area Education Center is a partner of the New York State AHEC System. The New York State Area Health Education Center System is funded by the federal Department of Health and Human Services (Bureau of Health Professions), New York State’s Health Care Reform Act of 2000 and through local community support.
